How to Book Hard-to-Get Disney Reservations

Character meals, signature restaurants and small-capacity experiences sell out in seconds. Why they book out, and the tactics that actually work.

Some Disney reservations are difficult. A handful are effectively unbookable at the moment the window opens: character meals, the signature restaurants inside the parks, and the experiences that seat a few guests an hour. If you have tried for one of them and come away with nothing, the problem is usually not your technique — it is that far more people wanted that table than there were tables.

What follows is what our own alert data says about which reservations are hardest right now, followed by the tactics that actually change the odds.

What our alert data says is hardest right now

Nobody sets a reservation alert for a table they were able to book. Each alert is a guest telling us they want a reservation they do not have, so alert volume tracks how sold out a restaurant is, more directly than any public source can. This is a demand ranking, not a quality ranking, and these 10 are the top of that list, not the whole of it — ranked by alerts created in the last 90 days:

  1. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom Park Walt Disney World
  2. Topolino's Terrace – Flavors of the Riviera Walt Disney World
  3. Cinderella's Royal Table Walt Disney World
  4. 'Ohana Walt Disney World
  5. Blue Bayou Restaurant Disneyland
  6. Harmony Barber Shop Walt Disney World
  7. My Royal Dream Disneyland Paris
  8. The Beak and Barrel Walt Disney World
  9. Space 220 Lounge Walt Disney World
  10. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at the Disneyland Resort Disneyland

These figures count reservations found for MouseWatcher users' alerts. They are not a complete census of Disney availability.

Why these particular tables book out

A dining room seats what it seats

The restaurants at the top of this list are not merely popular, they are small, or slow, or both: a castle dining room with a fixed number of seatings, a chef’s table, a workshop that takes eight guests at a time. Popularity can grow without limit. Capacity cannot, and no amount of planning on your side changes the arithmetic of a room that seats eight.

Everyone books on the same morning

Because reservations are released on a fixed schedule rather than trickling out, every guest chasing a given date is competing in the same few seconds. There is no advantage to be had by being early in any sense other than that one — the booking window guide explains when your particular window opens.

Resort guests reach further

At Walt Disney World, guests staying at a resort hotel can book their whole stay from the window that opens for their check-in date. For the most sought-after restaurants that can mean the table is spoken for before a day guest’s own window ever opens, which is why some names on the list above are effectively never available at release.

What actually works

Watch continuously instead of checking

Once the release is gone, what is left is other people changing their minds — and you cannot schedule that. An opening exists for as long as it takes the next guest to find it, which is rarely long, so looking twice a day means finding one only by coincidence. A MouseWatcher alert is the other approach: it checks for your restaurant, your dates and your party size continuously, and texts or emails you a booking link the moment a match appears.

Bring more than one date

This is the single biggest lever you control. Each extra target date is another independent chance for somebody else’s cancellation to land somewhere you can use it, and a single-date search for a top-of-the-list restaurant is the hardest version of this problem.

Loosen party size and mealtime before you loosen the restaurant

Tables come back in the size they left in, so a party of four and a party of six are searching different pools rather than the same pool at different difficulty. Mealtimes work the same way: lunch at a signature restaurant is routinely easier than dinner at the same restaurant on the same day, and breakfast easier still.

Do not stop when you book something

An acceptable reservation is a floor, not a finish line. Keep the alert running for the one you actually wanted — you can cancel the fallback when the better table arrives.

Absence from a list is not evidence of ease

The ranking above is the top of our users’ lists, not a survey of Disney. We only ever see openings for the restaurants, dates and party sizes somebody is watching, so a restaurant missing from it may simply be one fewer of our users has asked us to watch. Browse everything we watch to find yours.
